For Workers
Workplace injuries happen fast, and what you do in the first 24 hours can affect your health, your compensation, and your recovery. Whether it’s a fall, sprain, machinery accident, or something more serious, follow these 5 steps to get the right support and protect your claim.
Step 1: Get Medical Help — Fast
Your health comes first. See a doctor immediately. You can go to your usual GP, or contact an injury specialist like RTW QLD for same-day medical care with experience in workplace injuries.
Pro tip: Keep all your medical records — they’re essential for your WorkCover claim.
Step 2: Tell Your Employer
Report your injury as soon as possible. This can be verbal or written — but written is better. Your employer will need to document the incident and submit it to their insurer.
The sooner you report it, the better. Delays can affect your claim outcome.
Step 3: Get a Work Capacity Certificate
Your doctor will need to complete a Work Capacity Certificate, which outlines what duties (if any) you can do. This is essential to lodge a claim and begin planning your return to work.
RTW QLD can issue this certificate at your first appointment.
Step 4: Lodge a WorkCover Claim
In Queensland, you or your employer can lodge the claim — but don’t assume someone else will do it. Use the WorkCover QLD online form or ask us to help.
You have 6 months from the date of injury to lodge a claim (but do it ASAP).
Step 5: Start Your Recovery With the Right Team
Recovery doesn’t stop with a bandage. Workplace injuries need structured rehabilitation, and return-to-work planning — especially if surgery or time off is required.
At RTW QLD, we manage your care, liaise with insurers and employers, and support you from day one until you’re fully back on track.
