For Workers
What is an IME?
An IME (Independent Medical Examination) is a medical review requested by WorkCover QLD or another insurer. It’s carried out by a doctor who isn’t involved in your treatment. Their job is to give an independent opinion about your injury, recovery, or work capacity.
You might be referred to an IME if:
Your claim has conflicting medical opinions
There are delays in recovery
Work capacity or return-to-work is unclear
Surgery or long-term treatment is being reviewed
Should You Be Worried About an IME?
No — but you should be prepared. IMEs aren’t designed to “catch you out”, but they do carry weight in your WorkCover claim.
Our tip: Be honest, consistent, and clear about your symptoms and limitations.
The doctor will assess:
Your medical history
Your current condition
Whether treatment is appropriate
Whether you can return to work (and in what capacity)
Can You Take Someone With You?
Yes — you’re allowed to bring a support person to your IME. This can help reduce anxiety and ensure you feel supported. Just let the IME provider know beforehand.
How to Prepare for an IME
Arrive early and bring ID
Know your injury history — bring relevant reports
Describe your symptoms clearly
Stick to the facts — don’t exaggerate or minimise
Ask questions if unsure — it’s your right
RTW QLD clinicians can help prepare you for your IME and provide continuity of care post-appointment.
What Happens After the IME?
The IME doctor will submit a report to the insurer. You usually won’t get the report directly, but your treating doctor or case manager might discuss it with you. If you feel it’s incorrect or unfair, you can challenge it with help from your healthcare team or legal advisor.
